Tata Steel Celebrates P.N. Boseโ€™s 170th Birth Anniversary

On May 12, 2025, Tata Steel marked the P.N. Bose’s 170th Birth Anniversary by celebrating the legacy of the pioneering geologist whose contributions laid the foundation of Indiaโ€™s first integrated steel plant. The celebrations, filled with tribute and inspiration, highlighted Boseโ€™s enduring legacy and the modern-day importance of critical mineral exploration in Jharkhand.

๐Ÿงฑ P.N. Bose: The Visionary Behind India’s Steel Backbone

P.N. Bose, born on May 12, 1855, in West Bengal, was more than a geologistโ€”he was a nation-builder. After graduating in science from London University and completing his studies at the Royal School of Mines, he became the first Indian to hold a senior post in the Geological Survey of India.

One of his landmark discoveries was the iron ore deposits in Gorumahisani (Mayurbhanj, Odisha), which directly influenced Jamsetji Tata to establish what would become Tata Steel in Jamshedpur in 1907. His foresight, scientific approach, and nationalistic drive were instrumental in laying the geological and industrial groundwork for a self-reliant India.

๐Ÿญ Tata Steelโ€™s Homage and Celebrations

Tata Steel paid tribute to this luminary with great reverence and purpose. The event, organised by the Natural Resources Division (NRD) in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence, was attended by senior executives, including:

  • D.B. Sundara Ramam, VP (Corporate Services)

  • Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workersโ€™ Union

  • Akhouri Bishwapriya, Dy Director General, GSI Jharkhand

A digital homage was planned across all Tata Steel locations, reflecting the company’s commitment to Boseโ€™s legacy. At the Centre for Excellence, a P.N. Bose Memorial Lecture was delivered by Bishwapriya, covering the โ€œOverview on Geology of Jharkhand and Status of Critical and Strategic Mineral Explorationโ€.

โ›๏ธ Focus on Strategic Minerals in Jharkhand

A core highlight of the memorial lecture was the emphasis on exploring critical and strategic minerals (CSM) in Jharkhandโ€”a state rich in geological assets. The discussion centered around:

  • Jharkhandโ€™s mineral potential.

  • Challenges in CSM exploration.

  • Opportunities for self-reliance in resources like lithium, rare earth elements, and cobalt.

With over 70 professionals from NRD attending, this session reinforced the importance of Boseโ€™s scientific legacy in modern mining and resource planning.

๐Ÿ“œ Legacy of P.N. Bose

Apart from his discovery that inspired Indiaโ€™s steel revolution, Boseโ€™s list of firsts includes:

  • First Indian science graduate from a British university.

  • Discoverer of petroleum in Assam.

  • Founder of Indiaโ€™s first soap factory.

  • Initiator of microsections in petrological studies.

  • Catalyst for the Bengal Technical Institute, now Jadavpur University, where he served as the first honorary principal.

His life was a synergy of science, industry, and national development.
