Drone-Based Quantum Key Distribution

India is now setting its sights on airborne systems in a significant stride towards quantum-secure communication. The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and Synergy Quantum India have signed an MoU to jointly develop Quantum Key Distribution for Drones, targeting secure, next-generation telecom solutions. This innovative partnership supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and cements India’s ambition to be a global technology leader.

๐Ÿง Drone-Based Quantum Key Distribution

India’s premier telecom R&D body, C-DOT, has entered a strategic partnership with Synergy Quantum India, a pioneering deep-tech firm, to co-develop Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems optimised for drones. This initiative will utilise the BB84 protocol with polarisation encoding, pushing the technology to Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6) and beyond.

The move is intended to fortify India’s position in quantum communication and bolster its indigenous capabilities in secure telecom technologies, a critical domain in the digital age. Notably, this tech is crucial for applications like defence, emergency response, and critical infrastructure security.

The collaboration aligns with national policies on self-reliance in technology, particularly under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India initiatives. It represents a fusion of public research and private enterprise to innovate at scale.

The partnership also covers the co-creation of grant proposals, academic publications, and hosting conferences and expert talks, indicating a strong emphasis on both development and dissemination.
